A Busy Day Off

Today was a vacation day.  I was like, “Laura, you really have been working very hard you really need to take a day to yourself and try and relax so you can get some rest and recharge.”  My plans for the day were to wake up, bring H to daycare and Mia to doggie daycare, and then go get a manicure and pedicure.  After that, I thought that I’d get a flu shot and then take a nap or mop the floor… I really had very few plans.

What did I do instead?

At 7:10am I shot awake.  I heard a lot of cars outside, which meant the high school was starting soon.  H usually wakes up around 5:45 or so, he’s an excellent alarm clock.  But he wasn’t screaming.  He was sort of asleep and sort of not, I could see him rolling around but not really awake yet.  Then just a couple minutes later it was as if he realized it was past his waking time and just sat right up and squawked for me to come get him.  All week long, instead of screaming when he wakes up, he just sort of sits up, sometimes stands up and lets out very little noises so I easily could have missed it earlier in the morning.  I got the dog and the baby out the door and both dropped off by 8:45am.  I came back home and worked (I know) for an hour and then decided to go to Ikea.  I had a big list of items that I wanted to get, but I actually only came home with less than half of them.  One of the items was a very small dresser for the guest room, and when I got to the loading area the box weighed 105 pounds and although I have some super strength, I couldn’t get it into my cart.  I tried for at least 10 minutes but it just wasn’t happening.  That was totally unexpected.  The items that I was able to bring home are great: a new picture holding shelf for the dining room, lots of frames, shelves with hooks for H’s room, a rocking moose riding toy, 2 play rugs with roads on them for tiny cars (we’re creating a big play area in the basement), 2 glass whiteboards, a new desk chair, child plates and bowls, and a mirror for the guest room.  What I wasn’t able to get was the small dresser, more storage/organization for the office and hall closet, a play circus tent, and a toy organizer.  I sort of ran out of steam too.  I don’t know how 1 person can go to Ikea, it never occurred to me that I wouldn’t be able to load all of that stuff – but it’s Ok, it worked out fine.  Anyhow, when I got home, I worked for another hour or two and then my dad came over to hang the shelves for me and this seriously took 2 hours.  I don’t know why… does it take normal people 2 hours to hang 3 shelves?  I had to stand there the whole time too to hand him stuff (also is that normal?  It’s normal to me, I spent my childhood fetching things for my dad).  And then suddenly it was 5pm and I had to go pick up the kids.  Vacation Day = Over.

It wasn’t at all relaxing, but I think that I made good use of my time.

Behold my new dining room wall, where previously there was nothing at all for 1.5 years (excuse the horrible lighting).  If you’re wondering what is on the other walls – Answer: Still Nothing.  My mother is horrified every time she walks into the house.

photo 3Also done on my vacation day – assembling.  It took me an embarrassing amount of time, and I had 1 spare piece but it seems pretty solid to me!  H can’t walk yet, so I doubt he would even be able to sit on this moose, but it’s just so funny:

In other life news – H is trying his best to get into trouble where ever he can find it.  Yesterday he unrolled an entire roll of toilet paper all over the bathroom floor as I was in the shower.  Today, he pulled a plastic bag out of the drawer next to him and tried to eat it.  I don’t know what I’m going to do with him.

Oh Noooos, Baby Attack!

photo 2 Next time, I plan to take a day off to do something relaxing, I will try to stick to it!  Or be productive for half the day and relax for the other half.  I still need to get that damn flu shot.
