True or False?

38 weeks 6 days / 39 weeks on the dot.  I went to the doctor on Monday to get checked out and I wasn’t much further along than I was last Monday.  This time I measured at 1-2 cm dilated and 80% effaced, which is all around marginally more than previously.  However, they tell me at each of these appointments that where I am right at that moment doesn’t necessarily mean that something won’t happen hours from then or days from then.  Nobody knows what causes a person to go into labor, it just happens.  When they tell you this, you should believe them because without warning just 7 hours later my contractions started.  They didn’t start at 15 minutes apart or 20 minutes apart, they started right at 5 minutes apart.  They told me to call when they were intense for 5 minutes apart for 1 full hour.  I waited 1 hour and then called because we were on a doggie deadline for getting Mia boarded for the night.  My contractions at that time were very frequent but only moderate – if you can walk through them and talk through them, it’s nothing.  I asked if this meant that I’d be in full labor later on hours from then, and the doctor just said it could be hours or days.  Of course I was hoping for a more solid answer, but I suppose it’s better not to give those out.  We dropped off the dog at her daycare to be boarded anyhow just to be on the safe side – she had the saddest look on her face as if we were punishing her for something.  She totally had terrible anxiety for the past two days though, maybe she knew what was brewing.  We’d be in more of a pickle if we had to go to the hospital in the middle of the night leaving her at home than if we just brought her in and nothing happened.  After that we decided just to go to bed as if it were a normal evening.  I planned on working at home on Tuesday anyhow with the incoming snow.  We debated for a solid 30 minutes if my water had broken or not.  I always thought it would be really obvious – answer: it’s not.  In pregnancy, nothing is crystal clear because it’s different for everyone.  Around 11:30pm, my contraction strength picked up so I started to time them again.

Are these contractions the real deal?
Did my water really break?
Is this real labor or false labor?

It’s all TBD…
